The DecaPerfecta

I spent years looking for a rosary I truly loved — but always had to compromise.

I wanted something with real weight to it, something that felt great in my hand and that I wouldn’t want to put down again. So I set out to build my ideal rosary.

The result is the DecaPerfecta. One decade instead of five — because my ideal rosary is one that I can always carry with me.

It is perfect for me. I hope it resonates with you as well.

The Beads

The rosary is a prayer with a tactile dimension — and that dimension matters to me. It helps anchor the mind when distraction creeps in. So the choice of beads was the most important decision I made. Most beads are too small and too light for larger hands. After trying many materials — including several types of stone — porcelain took the crown. At 11mm (0.43 in), the size and weight are just right, and the surface is smooth but never slippery. Because the beads are slightly irregular in shape rather than perfectly round, there is always something to notice, something to return to. People who reach for a fidget toy will understand immediately.

The Crucifix

Weight matters on this rosary — and the crucifix has to match that. At 5.5cm (2.2 in), the Pardon Crucifix has the size and presence that is needed. But I did not choose it for size and weight alone. The Pardon Crucifix carries two inscriptions rarely found on a crucifix — a prayer of pardon for others and an act of faith. Originating in 19th century France, prayed with contrition, they unlock a plenary indulgence at the hour of death. For a crucifix you carry every day, that is not a small thing.

The Miraculous Medal

The rosary has always been Our Lady’s prayer — so to me, the Miraculous Medal is the logical choice. But the standard size of 2.5cm (1 in) always felt too small to me, which is why I am using a large 4.5cm (1.8 in) version instead. It matches the crucifix in both size and presence, and gives you something substantial to hold when the decade is finished and you find your way back to the beginning. You can customise your DecaPerfecta by adding additional medals — but be aware: given the size of the Miraculous Medal, smaller medals hitting against it will make your rosary considerably louder than you might expect.

The Paracord

I prefer paracord over a metal chain — and not just for practical reasons. To me it simply looks better and feels better in the hand. It comes in enough colours to open up real design possibilities, and it is genuinely durable in a way that metal chains, with their tendency to kink and snap, often are not. At 2mm (0.08 in) in diameter, the knots end up being just the right size — substantial enough to feel, small enough to still let the beads stand out. Once I tried paracord, I never went back.

The Clasp

The clasp traces the shape of a figure eight — the infinity sign. That felt right for something sitting at exactly the point in the rosary where the Gloria is prayed. I personally prefer to pray the DecaPerfecta as a straight strand — that is how it was designed to be held. But I wanted to offer the option to close it into a circle, for those who prefer that form, or who want to clip it to a bag or strap when they are not praying.

Fight your demons.
Pray the rosary.

When it comes to praying the rosary, deep contemplation is the ideal. But the rosary serves an additional purpose for me — it is my anchor. Something to hold onto when the world pulls in every direction.

Modern life is a constant stream of distraction and temptation. Without something that keeps you oriented toward what matters, it is easy to drift. The rosary is my compass pointing towards God — and I reach for it every time I leave the house. In my car, in the checkout line, or on the train.

A five-decade rosary is a beautiful thing, but it usually stays at home. One decade fits in any pocket — and the rosary that is always with you is worth more than the one that isn’t.

The rosary you won't put down.

I built the DecaPerfecta with one goal in mind: to make a rosary that feels so good in your hand that you reach for it without thinking. Not because you remind yourself to pray — but because it feels so good, you just can’t help yourself.

I don’t think there is any other object I pick up as many times throughout the day as my rosary. And once it is in my hand, the threshold to actually pray could not be lower.

The DecaPerfecta Passion

In my search for the ideal material for rosary beads, I eventually came across these porcelain beads. It was not just the material that convinced me — their unusual coloring also gave me a new idea.

The glaze is striped in white and turquoise, with varying amounts of red. Those red flecks immediately reminded me of blood. So I began selecting and arranging the beads in a way that would reinforce that impression. A blood-spattered rosary that recalls the Passion of Christ.

This may seem macabre at first glance. But Jesus Christ allowed himself to be scourged, crowned with thorns and crucified for us. He sweated blood for us. That is precisely what we contemplate when we pray the Sorrowful Mysteries. To look away would be the wrong approach — the whole point is to keep our eyes open.

This rosary takes more effort to make than the others. Every single bead is selected and arranged with care. The result is a rosary unlike any other — a true one-of-a-kind. That is true of all my rosaries, but of the DecaPerfecta Passion in particular.
